Deadline: November 30, 2007

Florida landscape architects must obtain at least 16 hours of continuing education credits per biennium. A minimum of two of the 16 hours must be obtained by completing an approved course on the Uniform Building Code (UBC) and a minimum of two hours must be obtained by completing a course on Florida's laws and rules affecting the practice of landscape architecture. The Florida Chapter of ASLA has a few more CEC opportunities before the November 30, 2007, deadline. These offerings, hosted by the Orlando and SW FL Sections, will include courses needed to fulfill the Florida Laws & Rules and Advanced Building Code requirements.

FL-LEAF
FLASLA has formed FL-LEAF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Florida corporation, for the sole purpose of raising money to establish endowed scholarships in the field of landscape architecture at LAAB-accredited Florida universities. After the scholarship funds are established and endowed at each institution, FL-LEAF plans to continue raising funds for these scholarships, with further donations to be made on an annual basis in equal shares to each institution.

If another university begins an accredited program in landscape architecture, FL-LEAF plans to endow a scholarship at that university as well, with plans to raise funds just for that institution until its scholarship fund is as large as the other universities.

President’s Award Dinner
November 8, 6:00 PM
Loeb Boathouse in Central Park

NYASLA will host the President’s Award Dinner honoring cofounders of the Friends of the High Line at the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park. This annual award is given to nonlandscape architects in the New York City area to recognize their leadership and contributions to promoting the profession of landscape architecture.

Since the 2003 ideas competition, the High Line has captured the imagination of many and has gone on to receive international recognition. The competition awards and subsequent designs have gained broad support from locally elected officials as well as preservationists, design professionals, open space advocates, and businesses, both locally and nationally. With the first phase of construction currently under way and set to open in the summer of 2008, Joshua David Robert Hammond have further elevated the status of the profession in facilitating the selection of Field Operations, a landscape architecture firm, to lead the design team for the High Line Park Development.

The President’s Award Dinner marks a special moment where the New York ASLA brings together leaders and practitioners from New York’s broad design community. In addition to acknowledging the accomplishments of our honorees, the President’s Dinner is the chapter’s largest annual fund-raising event, providing integral funding for activities, programs, and publications of the chapter throughout the year.

For tickets to this event, please contact Vicky Drew at 866-838-1409.

San Diego ASLA

The San Diego Business Journal will now add landscape architecture firms to its Book of Lists and will provide a special supplement to the June 9 paper. The San Diego chapter has been lobbying the Journal to start including the profession in its publications for some time now. You can contact the paper if you own a firm in San Diego and would like to be included, or contact Chris Gustard, ASLA, at chris@gmplandarch.com, for more information.

Seeking Mentors
After many successful years of the WASLA/UW Mentorship Program, it is time again to organize student–professional pairs for the 2008 program. WASLA is currently looking for professionals to mentor students in their second and third year of the BLA and MLA programs at the University of Washington. Your time commitment would be approximately two to four hours per month. Activities include introducing students to working in an office, taking time to review their projects, and possibly attending reviews. The idea behind the program is that the student and mentor "design" a program that works for them.

WASLA is hoping to match students with mentors starting November 12 and is looking for 30 to 35 professional participants.

Please contact Carrie Culp, ASLA, at carriec@highridge.com or by phone at 425-864-9824. Include your contact information (email and phone), firm name, and areas of specific interest or focus. Please feel free to call with questions.
