Mandatory Continuing Education Required in 30 States
ASLA's State Government Affairs staff updates the status for continuing education for the profession.

The trend continues toward requiring continuing education as a condition of state license renewal. Soon, 30 states will require continuing education for landscape architects. This month, the Alaska Board of Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors is expected to adopt rules that implement mandatory continuing education for all the professions that it oversees, including landscape architecture. The rules are expected to go into effect January 1, 2008, and the first renewal cycle for which continuing education will need to be completed will end in December 2011.

Similarly, the Missouri Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Professional Land Surveyors, and Landscape Architects is currently developing regulations. The legislature enacted mandatory continuing education requirements earlier this year.

The latest state-by-state information [pdf] on mandatory continuing education is available on the ASLA website, including details regarding:

  • the number of hours needed for renewal (including any credits that may carry over to the next renewal period)
  • the activities for acceptable CE (seminars, tours, presentations, etc.)
  • the subject areas for acceptable CE, including a definition of public health, safety, and welfare if available
  • record-keeping criteria.
