2007 Scholarships Awarded for Education in Landscape Architecture
CTASLA has named Dan Castle, of Terryville, CT, and Alex McSherry, of Bethany, CT, its 2007 CTASLA Student Scholarship recipients. These $2,500 scholarships, funded in part by proceeds from the chapter’s annual Golf Outing, are awarded annually by CTASLA to encourage education in the field of landscape architecture and increase awareness of the profession.
Mr. Castle is a senior in the Landscape Architecture program at Cornell University, with a minor in Animal Science. He has taken a diverse course load on his way to the dean’s list, combining his interests in landscape architecture and animal science, which he says will prepare him for his future career. “I believe a landscape architect’s job is not only to create comfortable environments, but also to design landscapes as ecosystems habitable by many species,” he said.
Marvin Adelman, FASLA, professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at Cornell, said, “Dan is outstanding in every respect. In my design studio, his work was clearly the best in the class.” Citing one example, Dan’s design concepts for an 88-acre park fronting on Seneca Lake in Burdett, NY, not only received an A+ but were lauded by town officials. “His drawings were so appropriate, complete, and well communicated that the town board selected his work to submit for park implementation grants.”
This summer, Mr. Castle is working for the Wildlife Conservation Society at the Bronx Zoo in the Department of Graphic Arts and Exhibitions, where he is helping to create new outdoor exhibits for the zoo's jaguar and snow leopard populations.
Mr. McSherry is entering his sophomore year at the University of Pennsylvania. Nature played a huge role in his life growing up, he says. “I was never the child that stayed indoors playing video games. Rather, I loved playing sports and being involved with the outdoors throughout the day.”
When he was scanning possible careers in high school in preparation for choosing a university, he discovered landscape architecture. “What better field for getting involved in our communities and the environment?” he said. “I can’t wait until I create a landscape that makes individuals feel better about themselves and provides them with a new sense of comfort.”
