Please respond to Mary Hanson by Monday, July 30, 2007

The ASLA Nominating Committee will meet during the upcoming annual meeting in San Francisco to prepare the 2008 slate of national officer candidates and requests your help in identifying potential nominees for the following offices:

  • 2009 President-Elect

  • 2009–10 Vice President, Information and Professional Practice
  • 2009–10 Vice President, Membership

Eligibility

Candidates for vice president must be Full Members of the Society.

Candidates for president-elect must be Full Members and must have completed at least one full term as a national vice president or chapter trustee. A sitting vice president or chapter trustee must complete his or her first term in office prior to installation as president-elect.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Executive Committee
The Executive Committee (ExCom) serves as the administrative committee and strategic planning arm of the Board of Trustees (BOT) and acts for the board between meetings of the board; approves and disbands chapter sections and student chapters; rules on membership appeals; selects the executive vice president (EVP) and reviews his/her performance; approves an annual slate of officer candidates; reviews/recommends to the BOT annual budgets and operating plans; short-lists nominees for ASLA honors and awards; and sets the time and place of the annual meeting. The ExCom meets face-to-face four times a year (twice in conjunction with the meetings of the full board), and holds monthly conference calls. The BOT meets in person twice a year (once at midyear and once in conjunction with the ASLA annual meeting) and may also conduct business via email or conference call.
  • President
The president acts as chief spokesperson for the Society, consistent with established policies, and chairs the meetings and facilitates the work of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. He/she works closely with the executive vice president (EVP) to set meeting agendas and monitor management and administration of the Society. The president appoints the chairs and members of committees in consultation with the Executive Committee and staff. The president also represents ASLA on the Presidents Council, serves as chair of the Annual Meeting Steering Committee, and serves as a director of the ASLA Library and Education Advocacy Fund (ASLA Fund).
  • President-Elect
The duties of the president-elect include participating in the meetings and deliberations of the BOT and ExCom, representing and acting for the Society and the president as needed, chairing the Nominating Committee, serving as a director of the ASLA Fund, serving as a member of the LAF (Landscape Architecture Foundation) Executive Committee and Board of Directors, and preparing for his/her coming presidential year.
  • Immediate Past President
The immediate past president participates in the meetings and deliberations of the BOT and ExCom, serves as chair of the ASLA Fund Board of Directors, serves ex officio on the Nominating Committee, serves as Executive Committee liaison to the Public Relations Advisory Committee and the Honors and Awards Advisory Committee, and assists the president as needed.
  • Vice Presidents
The vice presidents participate in the meetings and deliberations of the BOT and ExCom and assist the president with monitoring and oversight of the management and administration of the Society and with representing the Society as needed. Vice presidents serve as liaisons to committees and task forces within their defined program areas and are responsible for maintaining regular communications with the chairs of assigned committees and task forces. Vice presidents also facilitate BOT discussion groups and serve as directors of the ASLA Fund.

Please forward your list of suggested nominees by Monday, July 30, 2007, to mhanson@asla.org or fax to 202-842-0861. Please be sure to include full names and chapter affiliations.
