Connecticut ASLA

The Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (CTASLA) has announced the winners of the 2006 Connecticut Design Awards. The jury for this year’s competition was composed of members of the Potomac Chapter of ASLA.

- Devore Associates LLC (Fairfield), Merit Award in the Landscape Architectural Design/Built Work (Residential) category, for Juniper Crest (Darien)

- Wesley Stout Associates LLC (New Canaan), Honor Award in the Landscape Architectural Design/Built Work (Residential) category, for Westport Country House (Westport)

- Towers|Golde LLC (New Haven), Honor Award in the Landscape Architectural Design/Built Work (Corporate/Institutional) category, for Pierson & Davenport Colleges Courtyard Renovation, Yale University (New Haven)

Mississippi ASLA

8th Annual Coastal Development Strategies Conference—Smart Growth
May 9-10, IP Hotel and Casino, Biloxi, MS

The conference is considered to be the premier smart growth conference on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources’ Comprehensive Resource Management Plan (CRMP) and partner, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, are proud to host this conference.

Nevada ASLA

NASLA Southern members held their monthly luncheon on February 21, sponsored by Hunter Industries. They hosted guest speaker Norm Schilling of Schilling Horticulture, who is one of the contributors to Desert Bloom, the weekly gardening guide on NPR.

New York ASLA

Richard Alomar, ASLA, won the 2007 Chicago Prize sponsored by The Chicago Architecture Club. This juried competition was held to find a pedestrian link between Buckingham Fountain and the lakefront.

Oregon ASLA

OR ASLA Photo Contest
ORegon land invites the submission of photographs of landscapes, designed places, and people and wildlife within the natural and urban environment for our first per issue photography contest.

One grand-prize winner will be selected along with two runners-up. The grand-prize winner will receive a copy of Planting Design: Gardens in Time and Space, by Piet Oudolf and Noel Kingsbury with a foreword by Kathryn Gustafson. The entry deadline has been extended to March 1!

Washington ASLA

Landscape Architect License Bill
On January 29, WASLA submitted a bill to upgrade its current license from a title act to a practice act. Continuing education requirements and a new title of “Intern Landscape Architect” are also included in the bill. You may view the bill through this link: License Bill.

2006 Arizona Awards Exhibit and Reception at Arizona State University

This is an opportunity to display the 2006 Arizona Chapter Award recipient boards at the college, which includes architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design. The reception will allow students and professionals to meet and connect.

Landscape Architecture Merit Badge at Boy Scout Fair

The San Diego chapter will be setting up a booth at the Boy Scout Fair in the city of San Diego to present their chapter and local works and also offer partial merit badges to the Boy Scouts in attendance. They will discuss the profession and what it takes to be a landscape architect.

I Love a Clean San Diego’s 5th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup

Landscape Architecture Exhibit at Legislative Office Building

An exhibit of works of landscape architecture and overview of the profession (as well as Olmsted connection) will be on 30-35 mounted boards on 150 feet of wall space in the walkway between the State Capitol and the neighboring Legislative Office Building.

Regional Pattern Book Charrette

This charrette will produce images and text that will be compiled into a pattern book for growth. The FL|ASLA’s Committee on a Sustainable Environment (CoSE) is responding to a request by myregion.org chairpersons who have asked for the Florida chapter to develop new language, new governance, and visuals to help communicate and implement the vision laid out by the HSWG? (How Shall We Grow) initiative.

ASLA Open House
ASLA Florida A&M University Section

FAMU School of Architecture

The ASLA Tallahassee Section and FAMU MLA Advisory Council will have displays and presentations of student work, hosting of students from different majors and backgrounds aimed at encouraging social interaction and creating awareness of the landscape architecture program, and presentations by the advisory committee and the Tallahassee Section. Lunch will be served. There will also be a career awareness presentation at FAMU DRS high school.

Idaho/Montana

Members of the ID/MT chapter are working with a class of advanced learning students, fourth and fifth grades, to design a dog park for the city of Coeur d' Alene. The project involves not only weekly interactions with the students for more than two months but also a serious introduction to landscape architecture for the students and to the design process as well. Curriculum match-up goals will include exercises in research, writing, math, science, and speaking. A presentation to the school board and the city by the students will be planned for April.

Indiana

CAP: Indianapolis Center Open House

To kick-start the month of April, INASLA will be hosting an open house to their new home, the CAP Indianapolis Center. The evening will showcase not only the new office space acquired by the chapter but also projects completed by local members. This event is intended to display the many possibilities that landscape architecture holds. Allied professional organizations including IPA and AIA will also be invited.

Student Site Tours
April 4

Students from Ball State and Purdue University will have the opportunity to interact with professionals by way of a variety of site tours. The students will be invited to several downtown locations to discuss the design process with the firm responsible for the project. The afternoon will end with a pizza dinner and one-on-one discussion with practicing professionals.

INASLA Night with the Pacers

Downtown Indianapolis

INASLA will be hosting an afternoon with the Pacers when they play the New Jersey Nets. INASLA will be featured on the big screen during the game and members will have a chance to go down on the court and shoot a free throw. As part of the afternoon, we will also have a central gathering location for members.

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

For the first time, INASLA will form a team that will participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure event. Not only will the money raised by the team go to support a wonderful cause, but they can use the opportunity to promote landscape architecture and designing for healthy living.

Continuing Education Lunch Chats

CAP: Indianapolis Center

INASLA will host a series of lunchtime chats throughout the month of April. These lunchtime chats will count toward continuing education credits, which are needed by licensed professionals throughout the state. These sessions will be held at CAP:IC, and lunch will be provided for the participants.

Each year Indiana members are invited to attend either the Purdue or Ball State student award juries. This process allows members to be involved in the selection of student Merit and Honor award recipients from each school.

Arbor Day Tree Planting

INASLA has agreed to team with the city of Columbus, Indiana, to sponsor and participate in its annual Arbor Day Tree Planting program. This event would be a way for the membership to educate younger children on the benefits of tree planting and the basics of the profession.

North Carolina

Coastal Section

Lower Cape Fear Earth Day Celebration: The Heat is On!

The Lower Cape Fear Earth Day celebration will be held at Hugh MacRae Park. There will be several environmental exhibits on display, including various organizations and businesses and a booth for the NCASLA. The booth will promote the landscape architecture profession and highlight the theme for Landscape Architecture Month: “Discover Careers in Landscape Architecture.” There will be exciting activities for all ages centered around taking care of the planet. Activities will include biodegradable bubble making, a touch tank, and soil searches. Visitors can go to each of the booths, participate in oyster shell recycling, check out rain barrels, learn about biofuel, and much more.

Utah Annual Meeting
