Heading Through the Rapids
ASLA Licensure Summit Slated for June 22-24

Mark your calendars: The sixth annual ASLA Licensure Summit has been scheduled for June 22–24 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The weekend begins with a welcome reception on Friday evening. The meeting formally begins on Saturday morning and concludes at noon on Sunday. The ASLA Licensure Committee and staff are working with sister organizations CLARB and CELA in developing a productive agenda that will meet the needs of each one of our chapters.

The focus of the Licensure Summit is advocacy, and sessions are expected to support landscape architects who are protecting, updating, upgrading, or establishing licensure across the United States. This will provide value even to states that have had a practice act for decades.

Each state is invited to select one representative for the conference. Chapters that encompass more than one state can select one representative from each state, while chapters that share a state must combine for one delegate. ASLA will pay the travel expense (airfare and two nights in the host hotel) for each of the 50 delegates. Chapters are invited to apply for an additional representative, but ASLA must approve the addition and the cost will be borne by the chapter. If you’d like more information, contact ASLA Government Affairs Director Julia Lent.

Grand Rapids promises to be a beautiful venue for the summit. The conference will be held at the Grand Plaza Hotel located right on the banks of the Grand River in the heart of the downtown business and museum district. Michigan Trustee Pamela Blough, ASLA, gives us a preview:

There are many exciting and beautiful places, both natural and man-made, in the West Michigan area. Downtown Grand Rapids is within 30 minutes of the Lake Michigan sand beaches and the fascinating ecosystems of freshwater dune systems and within a 10-minute drive of the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, including an incredible outdoor sculpture garden, special children's gardens, and an indoor conservatory. In addition, the downtown Grand Rapids Art Museum, Van Andel Public Museum, Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, and the Grand Rapids Children's Museum are all within walking distance of the hotel. West Michigan is also home to several sporting venues and world-class golf facilities, with fishing and hiking nearby.
