Line Dancing with Legislators
And other ways to promote the profession at the National Conference of State Legislatures Meeting.
From August 16-18, ASLA showcased landscape architecture at the annual meeting of the National Conference of State Legislatures. This year, the meeting was held in Nashville, Tennessee, and staff was joined by Betsy Clapsaddle, Associate ASLA, Mary Vavra, ASLA, and Tennessee chapter executive director Katie Guenther.
This year’s meeting was well attended by state legislators from across the country, especially Tennessee and surrounding states. We had the opportunity to thank the House sponsor of licensing legislation in Vermont, Representative Sarah Edwards, for her support, as well as speak to legislators in other active states, such as Colorado, Michigan, Illinois, Maine, and Washington.
We rolled out the new factsheet for licensure, distributing more than 250 along with August issues of Landscape Architecture Magazine. The meeting also gave us the chance to educate legislators and legislative staff about the landscape architecture profession. This meeting gives ASLA the opportunity to reach hundreds of legislators and staff members through this exhibit process. The ASLA booth was even featured in the end-of-the-meeting wrap-up video!
Next year is expected to be another banner year for the meeting when it travels to Boston, Massachusetts, in August 2007.
