Media Opportunities for ASLA Members
Large publishing company seeks landscape architects for special magazine issue pertaining to residential gardens. National radio program Marketplace seeks contributors for its Public Insight Network who will contribute to the sustainability desk.

ASLA members have two unique opportunities to have their voice heard in the national media this month, one in a special magazine issue pertaining to residential gardens, and the other as an ongoing source for green building and sustainability issues for the American Public Media program Marketplace, a nationally syndicated program covering finance for public radio stations. Please see below for details.

Special garden issue
ASLA members have the opportunity to have their work published in an upcoming one-time special residential garden issue for a large publishing company. Any residential garden project can be submitted, but photos must be sent along with submissions, so projects currently under construction won’t be eligible.

To submit a project, email all of the following to Ashley Owens, ASLA Public Relations manager, at aowens@asla.org:

  • 2 Photos: High-resolution JPEG files (300 dpi or greater), with one large enough for a full-page spread
  • Photo credit information—please indicate if the photos have been published in other magazines or books
  • One-line description of the project (type of garden, location, etc.)
  • The landscape architect’s name and phone number where he/she can be reached for an interview

All submissions must be received by July 31, 2006, for consideration.

Marketplace sustainability desk
Marketplace is looking for experts to help contribute to its coverage of green building practices and environmental sustainability. The program is asking those with expertise in these fields to fill out short online surveys. Each survey asks a series of questions to help contributors demonstrate their knowledge of the issues. For instance, the green building questionnaire asks potential contributors to describe the “big technical issues builders and/or architects face today.” The sustainability questionnaire asks contributors for “the most unusual or inventive thing you’ve ever seen someone do to make their business, community, or home more sustainable.”

Members who fill out the questionnaires will become part of American Public Media’s Public Insight Journalism program, which includes more than 13,000 sources that help its producers and reporters quickly get up to speed on the stories they cover. Those who join the program will receive up to one email per month asking for their insight on issues stations plan to cover, and perhaps a follow-up call or email. American Public Media will not use sources on the radio or its website without permission, and it will never release contributors’ information to a third party, or use it for marketing purposes.

Joining the program will give landscape architects and ASLA members increased access to the media, and, potentially, the opportunity to influence how American Public Media’s radio programs cover the landscape architecture and green building profession.
