Student News

The University of Maryland hosted a very successful LABASH March 23–26, 2006, with more than 400 students in attendance. The career Expo had more than 50 firms recruiting for internships and jobs. ASLA public relations and government affairs staff manned the ASLA exhibit booth at the Expo. Vice President Bill Eubanks, ASLA, Sadik Artunc, FASLA, and Trustee Susan Hatchell, FASLA, conducted two very well attended and highly rated Leadership Development sessions. President Dennis Carmichael, FASLA, addressed the students at the closing ceremony.

The Student Chapter President Luncheon, held each year in conjunction with LABASH, had a record 38 student leaders in attendance. ASLA was well represented by President Carmichael, Executive Vice President Nancy Somerville, Vice President Eubanks, Trustee Hatchell, Artunc, Student Representative Rich Bensman, Associate ASLA, and Managing Director Mark Miles. See April’s Rep Rap for Rich’s summary of the meeting.

Jeffrey Orkin, Student ASLA, from Mississippi State University was elected 2006–2007 Student Representative to the ASLA Board of Trustees.

The Emerging Professionals Information Center, or EPICenter, was launched on April 11. This new site contains content of interest to both students and new professionals and is intended to ease the transition between Student and Associate membership. Initial feedback from visitors to the site has been positive overall, including some constructive suggestions for improvement.
