Firms and Chapters Lead in Green Roof Contributions
Brian Clark and Associates Issues Challenge to Iowa Landscape Architects

Fund-raising and product donations to close the budget gap for the ASLA green roof project are approaching $150,000 toward the $350,000 goal (see LAND Online article, November 21, 2005). Pledges are on a pace to meet the goal by March 1, in time to recognize supporters in a significant way at the April 22 dedication ceremony.

ASLA Kentucky Chapter President Geoff Egbers, ASLA, inspired other firm leaders to contribute, making a $10,000 pledge from his firm, Egbers Land Design, Inc., early in the campaign. “I feel as a member that it is important to support ASLA,” said Egbers. “This is the organization that represents the love of my life, being a registered landscape architect, so to contribute $10,000 over three years at $3,333 per year is an easy thing to accomplish as a payback for everything that I have received from being a landscape architect. My firm is a small design-build firm and we have two registered landscape architects."

Brian Clark, ASLA, of the Iowa-based landscape architecture and planning firm Brian Clark and Associates, echoed those sentiments, challenging all Iowa landscape architects to donate toward the ASLA green roof project by March 1, 2006; his firm will donate a matching amount up to $10,000. “Our firm has been a strong supporter of ASLA throughout the years and we recognize the importance of green roofs and the principles of conservation design,” said Clark. “By challenging the landscape architects of Iowa, we hope to leverage our gift to assist in reaching our goal. We have been very fortunate over the past seven years and we owe a part of our success to ASLA. This decision just seemed like the right thing to do.” Brian Clark and Associates is a 19-person landscape architecture, planning, and urban design firm with offices in Des Moines, Kansas City, and Sioux Falls. In addition to Clark, firm principals include Chris Della Vedova, ASLA, Terry Berkbuegler, ASLA, and Jon Jacobson, ASLA.

To date, 14 chapters of ASLA have contributed nearly $15,000 to the project, with one of the smallest chapters—Idaho/Montana—being the first to pledge (see LAND Online article, December 19, 2005). Most chapter leaders see the green roof as an investment in the profession and the Society.

"Because the Florida Chapter ASLA has the largest Chapter membership, we felt that it was our duty to support such a worthy endeavor," said Kevin Boyett, ASLA, Florida chapter president.  "Having a green roof on the ASLA National Headquarters Building is another tangible item that demonstrates the society’s commitment to the stewardship of the built environment. This project strengthens ASLA members role as the leaders in sustainable design. It is mutually beneficial at so many levels, while encouraging all of us to explore possibilities - whether on a project, with a client or in daily life."

“All of our executive committee members are excited about the project and see the pledge as a worthy expenditure that supports the goals of our chapter and ASLA,” says David Lycke, ASLA, national trustee for the South Carolina Chapter. Jane Kulik, ASLA, president of the Colorado Chapter, agrees: “We have received many benefits from ASLA and are pleased to be able to give something back to a wonderful organization.”

Susan Hatchell, FASLA, the North Carolina Chapter trustee, says, “This contribution is in recognition of the importance of this demonstration project to the advancement of our profession, the stewardship of the environment, and the opportunities it provides to educate the public.”

Contributions from firms are deductible for federal income tax purposes (personal contributions are not) and may be pledged over three years, payable by December 31, 2008. To contribute, complete the online pledge/contribution form. Contributors receive a number of high-profile recognition benefits based on the amount of the contribution.
