Originally constructed as an urban park, the South Street mall was revitalized in 2010 when landscape architect Ray Dunetz transformed a series of run-down basketball courts into a vibrant city park and urban oasis. The park is a gathering space along South Street, a commercial street with many local businesses, cafes, and restaurants.

The park is complete with attractive seasonal plantings that provide shade and separation from the busy street, ample seating on granite walls and benches, and attractive lighting, making the park a spot for morning coffee or conversations on hot summer evenings.

The most striking part of the park is the purple serpentine fence designed by local artist Beth Galston who worked with local fabricator Bartek Konieczny to figure out how to make the fence a reality. The fence creates a backdrop and separation between the pocket park and the two rebuilt tennis and basketball courts. The fence provides a striking sculptural element contrasting the more traditional park elements.
