2005 ASLA Design Medal

Laurie D. Olin, FASLA

The ASLA Design Medal is awarded to an individual landscape architect who has produced a body of exceptional design work at a sustained level for a period of at least ten years.

A founder and principal of Olin Partnership, Ltd. in Philadelphia, Laurie D. Olin, FASLA, has created landscapes that succeed both as social spaces and environmental systems. His projects span the globe, from Bryant Park and Battery Park City in New York, to the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles, to new squares in London and commercial development in Barcelona. His work on national monuments, including Independence Historical Park in Philadelphia and the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., provide elegant proof that security design and good design are not mutually exclusive. Mr. Olin’s work demonstrates that design that provides functional accommodation, symbolic meaning, and esthetic richness can make timeless human environments.

Read the nomination letter from Frederick R. Steiner, FASLA, and support letters from Niall G. Kirkwood, ASLA, Gary A. Hack, Gary R. Hilderbrand, FASLA, Alistair T. McIntosh, ASLA, and Paul M. Rookwood, ASLA.
