Testimonials to the Strength of ASLA

As a landscape architect for more than 30 years, I have always counted on
Landscape Architecture Magazine to keep me informed on the latest in lighting, paving, park structures, and site amenities.  I utilize the product information cards quite consistently. I also regularly attend the ASLA EXPO at the annual meeting each year. Nothing’s better then meeting face-to-face with hundreds of potential vendors for my design projects.

Our firm specifies many products for college campuses, schools, downtown streetscapes, and fine residences.  We use Landscape Architecture Magazine and the EXPO at the ASLA annual meeting to research what products and options are available to use.  We frequently specify site furnishings and amenities, lighting, green roof products, fences, masonry walls, fountain products, plantings, and special soil mixtures.  LAM is a very useful tool for product research, and we are proud to work with firms that are Corporate Members of ASLA.

My practice specializes in streetscapes and urban spaces, so I'm always looking to learn about the latest advances and newest products for street lighting, paving materials, and street furnishings. I look forward to the EXPO at the ASLA annual meeting to see and touch the products and talk to the product representatives to understand what's new and what's coming. It's a great way to keep my designs on the cutting edge. The Landscape Architecture Magazine ads are a great teaser to the show - they help me focus in on who I really need to see once I get there. It's an unbeatable combination.

When it comes to choosing products that help define innovative design, Landscape Architecture Magazine and the annual EXPO are valuable resources for our firm.

One of my primary reasons for attending the ASLA annual meeting is to spend hours--and sometimes days--scouring the EXPO for new ideas and products.  As a designer of contemporary residential gardens, I look to the EXPO every year to find new styles of site furnishings and amenities appropriate to my garden designs.  Each year for the past 20 years I have met wonderful manufacturers, distributors, and artists who have introduced me to a broader world of resources from which to select unique objects and furnishings.  Often times I develop relationships with these folks that allow me to order custom pieces, or help them develop new products.

I have been designing parks and recreational facilities for over 25 years.  Landscape Architecture Magazine has always been the first place that I go to find the products that I need to specify.  Those who understand and support our profession of landscape architecture are always represented there with the newest products.  I often take the publication with me to meetings with my clients, as they are interested in knowing that their project is on the leading edge of design and technology.  Each year I attend the ASLA EXPO with a list of product types that I need for projects that I have in process.  I know that I will find the solutions that I need and knowledgeable salespeople to help me make my projects successful.  I keep the conference book handy on my desk throughout the year for a quick reference guide for products for new projects.  Knowing that our corporate members not only want to sell to us, but to support the growth of our professionals, including me, shows the commitment that they have to being a part of our design solutions that we provide to the world.

For the landscape architect, Landscape Architecture Magazine is unmatched in the comprehensiveness and relevancy of its product advertisements.  We can find the newest and most exciting products in one place -- as well as the go-to standards that are currently available in the U.S. market. We found new green wall and green roof products in LAM when companies advertised the release of new products that could take the place of some sustainable details that used to require custom, on-site fabrication.

I attend the EXPO every year and make it down every aisle.  It’s a great opportunity for me to kick the tires, so to speak, of a huge variety of products and the latest technologies in person.

A big part of our workload is public park design so I especially make sure that I check out the latest children’s play equipment at the EXPO.  Because they can be so interactive, seeing and trying these products first-hand helps me to better understand what specification options are available to me.

Designing green roofs is a growing market so we are especially interested in visiting the booths at the EXPO that include green roof products.  We want to be sure to stay on top of the latest technology and materials.  Web sites and brochures are helpful, but seeing the products in person is so much more informative.

Landscape Architecture Magazine is not only an enjoyable and informative publication; it is a good resource for us for finding products.  We watch advertisements and look for articles to make sure we are staying on top of the latest technology and products, especially with green roof technologies.

In my practice, we often find the need to specify products ranging from furnishings and site amenities to drainage products and retaining walls.  These products must be cost effective, durable, and aesthetically appropriate for the proposed use.  Landscape Architecture Magazine and the EXPO are valuable resources that I use to stay current with what products are in the marketplace and to help find the best fit for my client and their project.

I specify furniture and site amenities on a regular basis.  To me, being an ASLA Corporate Member means that the company values our profession and feels a part of it—they participate in our success.  Whenever I am at an ASLA annual meeting, I always seek out Corporate Members to see their new stuff and to thank them for being there.  That means they are always there. Always.  That commitment to our profession goes a long way.

It is very beneficial to actually get to see, sit on, and interact with the site furnishings at the EXPO.  It gives you a better understanding of the style, comfort, and context of the product when you can use it rather than looking at a photo.  We are especially interested in some of the architectural planters and contemporary furniture--some with locations in our Chicago market that we did not even know existed.

It is always more fun to do business with friends.  The EXPO is a great place to renew contacts with the suppliers, nurseries, and others in the green industry.  There is an important business networking element to seeing them at the EXPO.  If I see Chris, Michael, Lori, or Bill at the EXPO, I am more likely to call these people I know on a first name basis when looking for an answer to a design problem.

Landscape Architecture Magazine is the first magazine I turn to when looking for product information.

I look forward to attending the annual ASLA EXPO each year to arrive at the cutting edge of learning the latest plant introductions.  It is a great opportunity to talk with horticulture specialists in person who share that rare collective passion for the beauty, performance, sustainability, and sheer importance of plants in landscape architecture design.

Landscape Architecture Magazine’s
Horticultural Product Suppliers Index, articles, and directory are tremendously important new resources for landscape architects focusing on planting design.  From the article on sustainable horticulture through contact information for a collection of the best wholesale nurseries in the country, I couldn’t put the issue down without checking out each and every nursery supplier listed!

The ASLA EXPO is better than any other annual design market I have attended and the lineup of merchants is tailor-made for all traditional, contemporary, and technologically-savvy landscape design professionals.

The first thing we do when we get new projects is flip through past issues of Landscape Architecture Magazine to look at products to consider, particularly paving, furnishings, and site amenities

The EXPO has been a great place for my firm to learn about new products and construction detailing, both for our projects on the boards and for future projects. There is nothing better than speaking directly with the suppliers and manufactures at the EXPO.

I look to Landscape Architecture Magazine for new product ideas and to the EXPO to see, feel, and touch traditional and new products.  The EXPO is also useful or networking and asking questions about products I have—or will—specify.  There’s nothing like a face-to-face encounter with a sales representative to get results!  The green roof exhibitors were particularly helpful in answering my questions and it was also valuable to see site furnishings, play equipment, and other materials to better understand quality, presentation, and comfort.  I’ve learned over time that it is risky to specify something I have not seen in person, so the EXPO is extremely helpful.

Landscape Architecture Magazine is an open book of great ideas and inspiration for students since traveling is not always an option. The products advertized in the magazine are innovative and provide students the jump start they need when thinking about their own projects.  The exhibitors at the EXPO provide students a wealth of knowledge and networking opportunities.  Product information and demonstrations allow students to see real world applications of what they study and get a good look at the future of the industry. This profession has many niche areas of practice and the EXPO is a great place to expose students to those specific areas.

As a landscape architect I am often asked by clients and engineers to assist them in selecting lighting for major projects.  While we do have many catalogs and cut sheets in our library, it is a true benefit to be able to browse the products in Landscape Architecture Magazine to see what new options manufacturers have.  The EXPO at the ASLA annual meeting then offers an excellent opportunity to meet face to face with manufacturer representatives, discuss the various options their product lines are going to have in the coming year, and see a variety of lighting products in one location to compare and evaluate.

As our profession evolves and leads the sustainable design movement, the EXPO at the annual meeting has become a major resource for me.   Pavers and stone work are major components of our sustainable site planning.  It is a great value to be able to compare what product offerings are available across the country and to interact with the manufacturers and let them know what we need in the industry.  I have made great contacts at the EXPO that I continue to go back to every year.

For the past 10 years, I have been a member of ASLA and I am a loyal reader of
Landscape Architecture Magazine. And for the past seven consecutive years, I have visited the ASLA EXPO.  LAM and the EXPO are the best resources for me to get to know the products used in landscape architecture. They have helped me find appropriate products to be used in our projects, including our five ASLA national award-winning projects.
