2300 by May 23 Campaign Surpasses Goal!
2010-05-24
To promote the need for more urban parks and recreational space across the country, ASLA advocates swung into action and embarked on a critical advocacy campaign – “2,300 by May 23”.  The successful campaign wrapped up with 2,585 messages to Congress urging their support for H.R. 3734, the Urban Revitalization and Livable Communities Act, which would create more parks that could help combat obesity, provide environmental benefits and provide economic boosts to communities.

Because of the “2300 by May 23” campaign, ten additional members of Congress have co-sponsored the bill in the U.S. House of Representative, including: Representatives Maurice Hinchey (NY), Steve Driehaus (OH),  Howard Berman (CA), Marcia Fudge (OH), Bennie Thompson (MS), Elijah Cummings (MD), Donna Edwards (MD), Jared Polis (CO), Jim McDermott (WA), and Diana DeGette (CO).  A few U.S. Senators have also shown interest in introducing a senate companion bill.

ASLA kicked off the campaign on April 21st, on the heels of a standing room only Urban Parks Task Force congressional briefing where former NFL star Eddie George, ASLA briefed members of Congress and staff on the role urban parks play in helping to economically revitalized communities.  As the owner of Edge, a landscape architecture firm, George also used the opportunity to highlight the important work of landscape architects in planning and designing urban parks and other critical outdoor spaces.
