ASLA New York Chapter President Susannah Drake, ASLA, recently wrote a letter to the editor that appeared in the New York Times on November 26, 2008. The letter was in response to a November 18, 2008 editorial titled “A Resounding Vote for Open Space,” praising the 62 referendums that approved $7.3 billion in new spending for parks and open-space preservation.

Drake’s letter commended the bipartisan support for such referenda that seemed to pass in the shadows of other election-related news. Also mentioned is ASLA’s support of H.R. 5867, the Energy Conservation Through Trees Act of 2008, introduced by Representative Doris Matsui of California, as an example of legislation that incorporates landscape architecture techniques to significantly reduce energy consumption.

H.R. 5867 would establish a grant program to utilize targeted residential tree planting techniques to help reduce energy usage in homes across the country.  The bill includes ASLA-recommended language to improve the care and maintenance of new trees.  For more information, visit ASLA’s web site.
