Preserving Community Character Through Design
Next Live ASLA Desktop Seminar August 7

On August 7, Past ASLA President Rodney Swink, FASLA, will present Preserving Community Character Through Design from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m., eastern time. Swink directs the North Carolina Main Street Program and is responsible for leading downtown revitalization and development efforts statewide. Since he became director in 1984, his award-winning work has resulted in over $450 million of new investment in Main Street community downtowns.

Participants can earn 1.5 professional development hours. If you are unable to attend the live session, the archived version will be available beginning Monday August 11.

Community character develops over time and is a product of the natural, cultural, and built environment. Is the design community contributing to community character or detracting from it? Citizens should expect more from designers and landscape architects. In this session, Swink will stress that designers and landscape architects should be the leaders in preserving community character.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the historical factors behind land use decisions in America.
  • Identify recent public policy trends that affect land use and development decisions.
  • Recognize emerging opportunities for landscape architects in community building.

The registration fee for individual ASLA members is $69. The archived session fee is $49. Group rates also are available. Go to http://www.asla.org/desktop.htm for details on this seminar and more than 30 others that are now archived. *

It is easy to register. Just print out the registration form (a pdf document) and mail or fax to ASLA along with your payment information. You will receive an email confirmation along with detailed instructions on how to view online seminars.
