2003 ASLA Awards Program - The Landmark Award
Entry Instructions

Thank you for participating in the 2003 ASLA Awards Program. The Landmark Award recognizes a built project completed 15 to 50 years ago that has retained its central form and character with the design integrity of the project intact.

Entry Process: Projects to be considered for the Landmark Award may be submitted by the original designer or firm, or on behalf of the original designer or firm, or by an ASLA Chapter for projects within their region.

Follow the step-by-step instructions, using the official Entry Binder provided. The jury will not consider submissions that do not adhere to the instructions or are not submitted in the Entry Binder provided.

Return shipping for the completed Entry Binder to the ASLA is pre-paid and shipping information is included. Completed Entry Binders must be received no later than Friday, May 16, 2003, at 5:00 pm EDT, at the ASLA offices, 636 Eye St., NW, Washington, DC 20001. No exceptions. Entry Binders for award winning submissions will be kept by the ASLA for media purposes and archived for future reference. All other binders will be returned to the submittal contact shortly after the jury meets in late June.

Award Notification and Recognition: The Awards Jury will meet June 20-22 and award recipients will be notified shortly thereafter. Awards will be presented at a special celebration during the ASLA National Convention, October 30-November 3, in New Orleans, LA. Award recipients will receive recognition in local and national media and in national design publications, in addition to being featured in ASLA publications and on the ASLA website.

The Landmark Award Entry Instructions

  • Judging criteria will include: the profound and enduring significance the project has held in its community; the substantial contribution it has made to the community's quality of life; and evidence that the project has remained consistent with or increased its level of importance since the project's completion.
  • The Descriptive Data Summary, drawings, photographs, CD-ROM, and supporting materials must fit into the Entry Binder provided by the ASLA (12 pages providing 24 views, back-to-back). The jury will not remove any items that are oversized or behind other items. Additional material not included in the binder will be discarded.
  • Unlike the Professional Awards, entries for the Landmark Award may reveal the name of the project, the original landscape architect/designer, and owner(s) as appropriate and relevant in the descriptive data and supporting materials. The nominator, however, should only be listed on the Identification and Credit Form.
  • Entrants are responsible for clearing photographs with photographers for publication and reproduction by ASLA. ASLA will provide proper photography credit when using the photos, but will not assume responsibility for any copyrights or photographic fees.
  • Binder covers may not be altered in any manner. Entry Binders should contain the following items in the order listed:

1. Descriptive Data Summary: Complete the Descriptive Data Summary Form (rich text format) and place the two (2) pages so that they show as the first two views of the Entry Binder.

2. Drawings and Photographs:

  • Please submit at least five (5), but no more than ten (10) total drawings and/or photographs, in both hard copy and on CD-ROM (see details below).
  • Drawings, such as site plans or elevations, must be to scale, and the hard copies for the Entry Binder may be as large as 8.5" high x 11" wide and executed in any medium. Oversized or folded drawings will be discarded without consideration.
  • Hard copy photographs must be a minimum of 5" x 7" in size and no larger than 8" x 10."
  • Identify all hard copy drawings and photographs on the reverse side with the corresponding Entry Binder number and photographer credit, as applicable.
  • New! Digital images, rather than slides, are required this year. Please submit identical copies of the drawings and photographs included in the Entry Binder on an IBM-compatible CD-ROM. The images must be stored in JPEG format and the dimensions should be 1024 pixels x 768 pixels, at a minimum of 300 ppi (pixels per inch). Please label the CD-ROM jewel case with your assigned entry number. Please number each image to correspond with its hard copy and Description (see #3) in the Entry Binder. Each image should be labeled with your entry number and the number of the image. For example, if your entry number is LA-123, you will label your JPEG files as LA-123-01, LA-123-02, LA-123-03, etc. Secure the CD-ROM in the pocket inside the front cover of the Entry Binder.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please submit high quality images and photographs. This will significantly improve your ability to communicate with the jury, as well as with the media, should your entry prove successful. Please seek assistance from service providers (such as a professional photographer, Brownie's Blueprint, MotoPhoto, Kinko's, etc.) as needed in order to improve the quality of the Entry Binder, drawings and images, and/or to produce the CD-ROM of digital drawings and photographs.

3. Drawings/Photographs Descriptions: On a separate, one-page, typed sheet, please provide one or two sentences describing each drawing and photo. Place the sheet in the view immediately following the photos in the Entry Binder. Please note drawing and/or photography credits for each image.

4. Supporting Materials: Please include supporting graphic and written information to illustrate the value of the project, such as printed articles and other media coverage, and/or letters of support from relevant sources, such as the client/owner, local public officials, and community organizations. All supporting materials must fit into the views provided in the Entry Binder.

5. Concealed Identification and Credit Form: Complete the Concealed Identification and Credit Form (rich text format) and follow the instructions provided on the form.
