Fellow Nomination Guidelines |
Each year, the Council of Fellows inducts a new Class of Fellows. The
call for nominations for the 2008 Class of Fellows closes on February
15, 2008. International ASLA members who wish to be considered
for nomination by the Council of Fellows Executive Committee must submit
a complete package by December 31, 2007. The Fellows jury will meet in
March.
The number of members elected yearly to Fellow is not limited in any
way.
Election is based solely on professional excellence and outstanding accomplishments
as represented in the nomination materials presented for each nominee.
Fellows are elected based on their contributions in one of four categories:
Works
Leadership
Knowledge
Service
Each submission should be clear, specific and succinct, highlighting the nominee’s
very best efforts and accomplishments across all aspects of his/her career
as a landscape architect. The person who researches, writes and compiles
the submission is acting as the nominee’s advocate. As such, the
author of the submission should be a person who knows the nominee well,
and who is comfortable writing about very specific and unique aspects
of the nominee’s work and professional career. This person should
completely familiarize themselves with the submission requirements to
better understand the depth and breadth of the documentation needed in
each nomination category. An outstanding submission can take up to two
full months to prepare.
| Fellow nomination packets must include: |
- A nomination
form (pdf) signed by both the nominator and the nominee
- electronic signatures will be accepted.
- Nominating group’s statement of support (no more than
5 pages) including a nomination statement signed by the nominee’s
chapter president, the ASLA president, or the Council of Fellows’
chair – electronic signatures will be accepted.
- A digital headshot image (minimum 300dpi resolution)
of the nominee
- All images including headshot must be individually submitted
electronically on CD ROM.
- In the Works category 12-20 images must also be submitted in
a powerpoint format with project titles on each slide.
PowerPoint may be converted into a PDF. Please note that
only images submitted under Works will be reviewed by the jury.
|
Fellow nomination packets must be received no later than close
of business February 15, 2008 via mail at:

| Each nominating group is responsible for ensuring that members nominated
for Fellowship meet all of the following criteria. Nominations may
be made only by: |
- A chapter executive committee
- The ASLA executive committee
- The Council of Fellows executive committee
|
Any member of ASLA may recommend an eligible ASLA member to one of these three
groups for consideration as a nominee via written documentation highlighting
the member’s accomplishments.
| To be eligible, nominees in a category must: |
- Be an ASLA Full Member in good standing
- Have achieved at least 10 continuous years as a Full
Member at the time of nomination.
- Have demonstrated exceptional contribution over
an extended period of time.
- Have had a significant impact on the public
and the profession
- Have received recognition for that contribution
and its impact from multiple sources.
|
Chapters can download their respective lists of eligible members. Click
here to access the downloadable lists by chapter. You can also click
on Eligibility by Chapter
in the left hand margin to download these lists. A list of eligible international
members can also be downloaded on this page.
An individual may be nominated in two categories, with
two individual nomination packets, one for each category, must be prepared
and submitted.
Category specific requirements follow below. Please pay careful attention
to the description of each category when deciding what materials to submit.
Only those materials that most clearly support nomination in that category
should be included in a submission. Also give careful thought to the category
you choose for each nominee; be certain the category is the most appropriate
for the nomination. The jury may change a category of submission for a
nominee, as long as the nominee has given the jury permission to do this
on the nomination form.
Works —should demonstrate
mastery of design in significant works of landscape planning or design,
which has advanced the art, stewardship, and social responsibility of
landscape architecture of the period. Work may include small or large,

- Clearly identify the nominee’s role and responsibility
in each project cited, not just the nominee’s title on the
project or lengthy descriptions of the projects themselves. Also

these pertained to the nominee. Provide attribution for all built
works.
- Explain the importance and significance of completed works,
including any limitations or challenges overcome to complete the
cited projects.

for each image of one to two sentences, including the title of
the project, the date completed, the project’s impact, and
the significant limitations or challenges (if any) facing the
project, and the role of the nominee in the project.
- All images including headshots and files must be submitted electronically
on CD ROM.
- NEW the 12-20 images
must also be submitted in a powerpoint format with project titles
on each slide. PowerPoint may be converted into a PDF.
|
Please note that the jury will ONLY review up to 20 images. Any nomination
in the Works category that contains more than 20 images will have
those images exceeding 20 removed from the submittal and the jury
will NOT review them.
The jury will NOT review multiple images. Any nomination in
the Works category that contains multiple images (image collages,
separate renderings, images, drawings or insets within an image) will
have those multiple images removed from the submittal and the jury
will NOT review them.
If you are in doubt whether an image is unacceptable, please
contact Joyce DePass at jdepass@asla.org.

Successful Nominations and Examples by Category |
The submission itself should be an aggressive, enthusiastic,
honest look at the nominee’s background and credentials in
relation to the category in which he/she has been nominated. It
should be a clear and outstanding narrative.
Below are links to four examples of successful statements of support
in each category. Please remember that the format, length of selections,
and presentation style used in your nominee's submission may vary
from these particular entries. |
|
Works of Landscape Architecture
(pdf)
Administrative Work
(pdf)
Knowledge (pdf)
Service to the
Profession (pdf)
|
| In addition, here are a few pointers for the written
submission: |
- Focus on the nominee’s best, most significant achievements.
Be certain the references directly correlate to the category of
nomination. Highlight the impact of the nominee’s accomplishments
by addressing the reach of the work and the positive results or
the “pebble in the pond” effect; answer the “so
what” factor by proving the value of the nominee’s
work to the specific category; and discuss the scope of the accomplishments
whether local, regional, or national.
- Clearly describe the nominee’s role in and impact on the
work. Refer also to the roles of others involved in the process
as those roles pertain to the nominee. Be precise in giving actual
attribution for the work, specify the specific responsibilities
of the nominee in team efforts, etc.
- Include awards received as those illustrate peer respect. Articles
written by someone else about the nominee or his/her work clearly
demonstrate this peer respect and should be included.
- Be specific! Use clear, concrete examples from the nominee’s
accomplishments to support your points. Provide evidence of the
resulting impacts of these examples.
- Text and images must be consistent and address each other. Whenever
possible throughout the materials, the year of occurrence for
the referenced items should be provided.
- The quality of the submission is extremely important as it
is considered by the jury within its deliberations.
- All images submitted must be submitted in digital format (minimum
300dpi professional quality) on CD ROM. Images depicting “before
and after” stages of a project are more effective than images
of the master plan.
|
Beginning with the 2004 nomination process, a member may only
be re-nominated for consideration as a Fellow for three consecutive
years. If not elected, a two-year break is required before
an individual can be nominated again.
Therefore, when resubmitting, please do not simply submit
the same materials. Rather, please prepare new, fresh,
updated materials, or new and different projects. Take advantage
of the successful examples as much as possible as these are excellent
guides.
|
5.
Nomination Packet Requirements |
| Fellows’ nomination packets must include: |
|
The guidelines for each component are listed below. Present only
the material requested. Keep in mind that no additional materials
(letters of support, books, videos, etc.) are to be submitted with
the nomination packet. Present the statement of support
and image descriptions in at least 10-point font size with one-inch
margins on all sides.
Also, the nomination packet does NOT require an
elaborate binder; these are not submitted to the jury and will not
be returned to the nominating group. For those nominees elected
to Fellowship, ASLA retains all materials and the rights to their
usage.
Up to four testimonials may be incorporated as
part of the five-page statement of support. Testimonials must be
confined to the validation of the significance of the nominee’s
accomplishments and work in the category of nomination. Do not limit
testimonials only to ASLA members, current, or past officers. |
|
| Each nomination packet must include the nomination
form (pdf). Both the nominee and the nominator
must sign this form under the declaration of responsibility. This
requirement ensures that both individuals attest to the legitimacy
of the information provided. If an individual is being nominated
in more than one category, complete a separate form for each category.
The form can be submitted electronically on CD ROM with electronic
signatures. |
Statement of Support (not to exceed
five pages) |
| The five-page limit for the statement of support will be strictly adhered
to. The image description page is not counted as part of the five-page
nominating statement of support. Any nomination packet exceeding five
pages will not be juried. If the individual is being nominated in
more than one category, complete a separate, five-page statement of
support tailoring the information to showcase the nominee’s
work and efforts for the respective category. The following information
and materials should be included in the statement of support |
- A nominating statement from the nominee’s
chapter executive committee, the ASLA executive committee, or
the Council of Fellows executive committee in support of the nominee,
and signed by the nominee’s chapter president, the ASLA
president, or the chair of the Council of Fellows, respectively,
depending on the nominating group. The nominating statement should
summarize and substantiate the nominee’s contribution to
the profession in the designated category, as well as other relevant
contributions. This statement should illustrate the impact of
the nominee’s work within the nomination category. It should
clearly illustrate the reason for the nominating group’s
support of the nominee for election to Fellow. This statement
should present a compelling argument for selection and should
contain specific examples of the nominee’s excellence, and
not be a reiteration of the other materials elsewhere in the nomination
packet. Someone within the nominating group should write the nominating
statement. The nominee should not write the nominating statement.
This statement can be submitted electronically as a part of the
five pages, and may include an electronic signature.
- Education (schools, degrees, dates), professional
experience (firms, agencies and academic institutions,
with dates), professional registration(s)
(state, certificate number, date).
- ASLA Activities (services, offices held, with
dates)
- General Information (cite only those activities
that relate to the category of nomination)
- (i) Honors, awards, and recognition
- (ii) Public service
- (iii) Membership in allied groups or organizations
List these three elements separately. Include activities and
leadership roles in organizations promoting landscape architecture
and its values. Also, specify honors, awards and membership
significant to the nominee’s category of election as
a Fellow.
- Major Accomplishments and Outstanding Professional
Activities, explaining the importance of the nominee’s
accomplishments over time and their recognition by others as they
relate to the nomination category. Detail the specific role and
responsibilities of the nominee in these accomplishments. This
section is critical in analyzing and explaining why the nominee’s
activities are of such a significant nature as to merit election
to Fellowship. This area should include examples that are significant
and specific regarding the accomplishments of the nominee. This
section should reflect the largest amount of information.
|
| Image Submission |
Images are required for nomination packets in all categories.
Only images submitted under Works of Landscape Architecture
will be reviewed by the jury as part of the election process.
Please note that the jury will ONLY review up to 20 images.
Any nomination in the Works category that contains more than 20
images will have those images exceeding 20 removed from the submittal
and the jury will NOT review them.
The jury will NOT review multiple images. Any nomination
in the Works category that contains multiple images (image collages,
separate renderings, images, drawings or insets within an image)
will have those multiple images removed from the submittal and the
jury will NOT review them.
If you are in doubt whether an image is unacceptable,
please contact Joyce DePass at jdepass@asla.org.
For the Works category:
|
- A maximum of 20 high-quality, digital images (minimum 300dpi
resolution) will be accepted. Past juries suggest concentrating
on a few projects and submitting several images of each.
- PowerPoint and PhotoShop are not accepted,
- Images should be of completed projects, avoiding sketches whenever
possible.
- Limit the number of master plan drawings submitted as well,
but be sure to label them well when they are used.
- Be sure the images are of a good quality in regard to color,
focus, and composition (minimum 300dpi resolution). The images
should reflect the significance and scale of the project.
- Using only a single, one-sided summary page
for these descriptions, describe each image in one or two sentences
by providing the title of the project, the project’s accomplishments
and importance, the limitations imposed (if any) upon the project,
and the role of the nominee in the project. This page
is in addition to the five-page statement of support materials.
- Images should be numbered 01 through 20, and should correspond
to the descriptions in the one-page summary.
- Images must be submitted digitally on CD ROM at minimum 300dpi
resolution. An effort should be made to utilize a horizontal composition
for the images.
|
Electronic Submission |
| Nomination packets can be submitted electronically on a CD ROM along with
the digital images. |
| Things to note when submitting electronically on CD ROM: |
- The format guidelines must still be reflected when the document
is downloaded from a CD ROM: five-page limit for the statement
of support; one-page limit on image descriptions; font size of
at least 10 points; and one-inch margins on all sides.
- The nomination form and statement of support may both be submitted
electronically with electronic signatures. Electronic signatures
will be verified through confirmation emails sent to both the
nominee and nominator with a copy to the respective chapter president.
- The nomination packets may be submitted as Word or PDF documents
|
| The jury convenes annually to evaluate the nominations and elect
the Class of Fellows for that year. The policies and procedures remain
basically the same from year to year for selecting the jury as well
as selecting the Fellows-elect. |
 |
Jury Membership |
 |
The ASLA president appoints a five-member jury from the Council
of Fellows. All jury members are appointed to a three-year term,
and in any given year, the jury will have at least one member in
their first year of service while others are serving for their second
or third year. A concerted effort is made to maintain a balanced
representation of different practice types and the diversity in
membership on the jury. The jury chair for the following year is
selected at the conclusion of each year’s deliberations.
The 2008 jury members are:
Peter Pollack, FASLA, Michigan- 2006-2008 , Jury Chair
Christopher Dimond, FASLA, Prairie Gateway-2008-2010
Barbara Faga, FASLA, Georgia - 2006-2008
Katherine Emery, FASLA, Arizona– 2007-2009
Len Hopper, FASLA, New York- 2007-2009
|
| |
| Under no circumstances may members of the jury be contacted
for input, suggestions, or support of any kind in the preparation
or submission of nominations. Jury members are required to decline
to assist those who unknowingly contact them. |
 |
Screening of Nomination Submissions |
|
| The secretary of the Council of Fellows and staff perform an initial
screening of nomination materials upon receipt at ASLA Headquarters.
This first review ensures that all eligibility criteria had been followed
and all submission requirements have been met including those resubmitting.
Any submission packets not meeting the criteria or requirements will
not be juried. |
 |
Jury Review of Nomination Submissions |
 |
All nomination packets are sent to each juror at least 30 days
prior to the scheduled jury session for review. The intent of this
first stage is to provide each juror with ample opportunity to review
all the written data for each nominee and review the images for
the nominees in the category of Works of Landscape Architecture
before convening as a jury. During this initial review period, the
jury may not discuss the contents of the nomination packets with
anyone, including other jury members.
The jury will meet in person for a final jury review to select
the 2008 Class of Fellows-elects in early spring. Election is based
solely on professional excellence and outstanding accomplishments
as presented in the nomination packets for each nominee. There are
no numerical goals or limitations to the size of each year’s
Class of Fellows-elect; nor are numbers of nominees submitted from
a chapter, two-category nominees, or number of nominees elected
by chapter factors in the election process. |
7. Nomination
Notification Process |
The jury peer review drives the core of the Fellowship program. After the
decision is finalized, a list of the new Fellows-elect is presented
in confidence to the ASLA president and the chair of the Council
of Fellows. This timing allows the Fellows-elect to be notified
in time to prepare for the investiture ceremony held during the
annual meeting.
The ASLA president will personally notify each Fellow-elect. No
public announcement will be made regarding the members of the class
until all elected nominees are notified. These calls will be followed
by written notification to all nominees. The secretary of the Council
of Fellows will immediately notify nominees not elected in the form
of a letter. The appropriate chapter presidents will also be notified
in writing of the status of the chapter's nominees. A letter with
general suggestions for resubmission will be mailed to nominees
not elected shortly thereafter.
When a nominee is elected, ASLA retains possession of all nomination
materials and rights to their usage.
