Tudor Place

Tudor Place is a unique site, tucked away among the quiet residential streets of Georgetown. It’s a historic estate, but what sets it apart from other tourist destinations is the fact that this stately neoclassical home and its lovely gardens remained in one family until quite recently. Built by Martha Custis Peter and her husband Thomas Peter in 1816, the estate was home to six generations of the Peter family, and each left their mark on the place.

The original layout of the grounds remains intact. It’s fascinating to stroll among the garden rooms imagining the activities that occurred within their leafy walls. The immediate and intimate sense of a family’s presence at Tudor Place brings history to life in a much more tangible way than at many other historic sites.
