HUD Plaza

Nestled into the sheltering form of the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building, the plaza by landscape architect Martha Schwartz provides a landscape of contrast to the building designed by architect Marcel Breuer, which was constructed in 1968 as headquarters to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Schwartz's design is a 1990's renovation of the original 1960's plaza. This landscape embraces restrictions of the underground parking garage and contributes a distinctive mark on the city. The plaza’s lightweight structures and shallow planters provide an urban oasis in the city.
