Completed in 1873, Eastern Market is the oldest continually-operating public market in D.C. Designed by local architect Adolf Kluss, the market is located at 7th and C Streets, SE, anchors the Capitol Hill neighborhood as a vibrant commercial market and cultural gathering space for the last century. The building’s interior features a large airy loft-like interior and distinct circular windows to provide ample light and ventilation for selling fruits and vegetables, cheeses, flowers, meats, baked goods, and more. Today the market extends outside along 7th Street and features a flea market on the weekends.

In 2007, the building suffered a devastating fire. Through massive fundraising efforts of the community and city, the market continued operations in an adjacent temporary structure while repairs were made to the building, which were completed in 2009.

Eastern Market invites people to wander, linger, and return here again and again. The combination of the quality of its goods, friendly interaction with knowledgeable vendors, and overall sense of community and spirit truly make it a neighborhood treasure.
