Call for Proposals: SAH - Places Prize on Race and the Built Environment

Date: 1/19/2022 - 2/21/2022

Type: Call for Papers / Submissions

LA CES approved?: No

Location(s): US

Description:

Applications are now being accepted for the SAH | Places Prize on Race and the Built Environment. The prize is a unique collaboration between the Society of Architectural Historians and Places Journal. The successful applicant will propose an original work of public scholarship that considers the history of race and the built environment through a contemporary lens.

The inaugural prize will address the theme of settler colonialisms, broadly considered. Potential submissions might examine the persistent role of architecture in legitimizing categories of racial difference and settler occupation; the evolving role of state power in racializing access to civic infrastructures; public amenities that undermine native self-determination; enduring governmental policies and institutional practices that exacerbate housing inequality and land dispossession; and similar subjects. Global and transnational topics are strongly encouraged.

The winner of the SAH | Places Prize will receive an honorarium of $7,500 to produce a major work of public scholarship to be presented as a public lecture through SAH and published in Places Journal.

The SAH | Places prize is open to mid-career, senior, and independent scholars who demonstrate a strong commitment to public scholarship.

Submit a proposal by February 21, 2022, at 5 pm CST.
